Assalamualaikum & Good Day everyone.
Praise be to Allah and His Prophet Muhammad SAW (peace be upon him).
I am delighted to address all of you as President of the Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA). It is an honour to extend a warm and hearty welcome to all of you, valued members, and supporters of MPA.
Firstly, I would like to express gratitude to our former President, Dr Selvakumar Sivapunniam, for his enthusiastic leadership, and extend thanks to the 2021/2023 Executive Committee – Professor Dr Muhammad Yazid Jalaludin, Dr Noor Khatijah Nurani, Dr Hung Liang Choo, and Dr Fahisham Taib—for their exceptional dedication in orchestrating activities and fostering the relevance of MPA.
New MPA Executive Committee for 2023-2025
Allow me to introduce the new office bearers for 2023-2025: Dr Intan Juliana Abd Hamid as Vice-President, Professor Dr Tang Swee Fong as Honorary Secretary, Dr Rakhee Yadav as Assistant Honorary Secretary, Dato’ Dr Musa Mohd Nordin as Honorary Treasurer, along with committee members: Professor Datuk Dr Zulkifli Ismail, Associate Professor Dato’ Dr Soo Thian Lian, Dr Thiyagar Nadarajaw, Dr Ong Eng-Joe, Professor Dr Kew Seih Teck, and Associate Professor Dr Erwin Khoo Jiayuan. I am confident their dedication and expertise will drive remarkable advancements within MPA in the coming years.
As newly elected President, my vision is to lead MPA at the forefront of ensuring the well-being and health of every child in Malaysia. We envision a nation where every child can thrive, grow, and reach their fullest potential, supported by a community of dedicated paediatricians and healthcare professionals. Our goal is to create a brighter and healthier future for the children of Malaysia. Insha’Allah, God willing, MPA commits to fulfil the following missions:
- Promoting Children’s Well-Being
- Gathering More Members (Life and Associate)
- Advocacy and Education
- Community Engagement
- Research Collaboration
MPA is more than an organisation; it is a community of dedicated healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, and advocates ensuring the health of our nation’s children. Some members may not be aware that MPA offers travel and research grants (subject to evaluation by our education board) funded by MPA or Malaysian Paediatric Foundation (MPF). Additionally, MPA assists in running non-profit activities for children’s well-being. Recently, our online journal, Malaysian Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health (MJPCH), achieved indexing in the Malaysian Citation Index (MyCite) and Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA), increasing its publications to three per year. MJPCH has applied for Scopus listing this year and looks forward to receiving positive results. For more on our activities, announcements, and events, visit our website at https://mpaeds.my/.
We also intend to raise the visibility and relevance of MPA among the public and policymakers, particularly concerning matters related to the well-being of children and adolescents. National issues such as child abuse, vaping, nutrition, vaccination, and others remain unresolved, and we at MPA strive to ensure our voice is heard. Globally, through our partnerships with the Asia Pacific Paediatric Association (APPA), ASEAN Paediatric Federation, and International Paediatric Association (IPA), MPA aims to assume a crucial role in championing children’s rights and ensuring their safety and access to necessities. This commitment aligns with ongoing situations, such as those unfolding in Palestine, illustrating the urgency of our mission.
In the coming months, let us explore, learn, and collaborate as we work collectively to provide the best possible care, support, and advocacy for our children. Stay tuned for the latest news and updates from MPA on our website and Berita MPA (BMPA) for valuable insights into paediatric care. Thanks to the dedicated team of BMPA, headed by Professor Datuk Dr Zulkifli Ismail and staff for their unwavering support in helping MPA amplify the message of child health and paediatric care.
I would like to quote a wise piece of advice from Khalifah Abu Bakr (1st Khalifah) after his appointment as the khalifah:
O people, indeed, I have been chosen to lead you all, and I am not the best among all of you. If I do good then help me, and if I do wrong then correct me. The truth is trust, and the lie is betrayal.
Let us also pray for the innocent Palestinian children who are living through hardships and challenges beyond their years. Grant them strength to endure, hope for a better future, and the resilience to overcome adversity. May peace and justice prevail in their land, allowing them to grow and thrive in safety and harmony.
Thank you for your readership and support. Together, we can create a brighter and healthier future for the children of Malaysia.
