
MPA PRECONGRESS 4 – MANAGING PAIN IN CHILDREN
Aims and Purpose
Despite the existing standards on pain assessment and management, pain in
hospitalised children remains under-recognised and under-treated. This 1-day
hands-on workshop is aimed at providing participants with knowledge and practical
skills in managing acute and chronic pain in the paediatric population. This workshop
will cover the following:
1. Pain assessment in children and neonates
2. Different modalities in procedural pain management
3. Post-operative pain management
4. Pain management in children with cancer, severe neurological impairment
and in neonates
5. Opioid use
Learning objectives
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
1. use validated pain scores to assess pain in verbal and non-verbal children
2. use the different modalities for managing pain during painful procedures such
as intravenous cannulations and immunisations in children of different age
groups including neonates.
3. decide on the appropriate analgesia in children experiencing pain.
4. implement safe use of opioids:
i. Know the different opioids available
ii. Know the indications of using opioids
iii. Able to safely prescribe opioids including starting and titrating
morphine and opioid conversion
iv. Prevent, identify and manage opioids side effects
5. identify the causes of pain in children with cancer, severe neurological
impairment and in neonates
6. know the principles of non-pharmacological management in children with pain
from cancer, severe neurological impairment and in neonates
7. address misconceptions about opioid use among parents
